Special guests Karen Mal (from Austin) and Laurie McClain (from Nashville) will present a concert of original songs at January 26th’s potluck. These ladies played for us back in 2010 and charmed many hearts, so we’ve invited them back. They’ve got new songs to sing and stories to tell, including the one about how they recently moved from friends to family through an adoption miracle.
Both Karen and Laurie write songs about the ordinary and spectacular nature of humanity: love, loss, growth, wonder, dreams, memories, and hope. With lovely and genuine voices in a refreshingly acoustic setting, Karen and Laurie will share their music with you the way it’s been done for thousands of years: intimately, unplugged and accompanying a wholesome meal in the comfort of a private home.
Laurie’s voice feels like my favorite moisturizer; it sinks in quickly and starts to heal. Her songs go deep and they stay with you.”-SUZY BOGGUSS
“Laurie has got to be from another planet. I’ve never met anyone – except maybe Richie Havens – who is so open-hearted and full of love for humanity, yet who appears to experience life on a different plane than everybody else. Her music is as innocent as it is informed by experience, as playful as it is rooted and as detail-oriented as it is grand it scope…”-DEVON SPROULE
“I am in awe of Karen’s singing. Her voice is one of those rare gifts that make singing seem effortless” -SLAIDE CLEAVES, Rounder recording artist
“Karen Mal ‘s songs are like the old time remedy that mixed honey and lemon….They are sweet without being precious and have a lasting bite to them that makes them both memorable and good for you. Add a voice to match, and you have a musical panacea, curing our ills and adding to the grace of living.”-MICHAEL JAWOREK, THE BIRCHMERE
