The Food Transition Period

Changing the way you eat may sound difficult, but the more changes made, the better the health that you can achieve. It may be difficult to make changes all at once. It may be easier to make changes slowly, to your comfort level. We can work together to create a program which will work for you. The goal is to get you moving on the road towards optimal health and prevention of degenerative disease. The closer you come to following these guidelines, the better the health you can achieve.

To begin, make the following additions to your daily diet:

Fresh Fruit - at least 3 pieces per day

Salads - at least one large salad per day with dinner, lunch, or both if possible

Vegetables - at least 3 cups per day, at least one cup of green vegetables like broccoli, spinach, kale, collards, cabbage, and any other greens

Whole Grains - at least 2 servings per day

Legumes - at least 3 servings per week

Try these changes for a few weeks before trying to be strict. Adding these foods to the diet will automatically displace other foods in the diet and cut down on the consumption of less healthy foods.

Once you are comfortable with the additions, then you can start to eliminate some of the other foods starting with the ones that are easiest to give up.

These recommendations are meant as guidelines. Follow as closely as possible, but be kind to yourself if you can't be perfect. No one is perfect. The closer you come, the better, but do it at your own pace.

Dr. Ritamarie Loscalzo likes to think of  herself as a health coach.  She is a doctor of chiropractic and a certified clinical nutritionist.  In addition, she has a masters degree in human nutrition, advanced training in nutrition and integrated health care, and is certified in acupuncture.

Her philosophy of health care stems from her belief that the body is born with enormous self-healing potential.  Unfortunately, lifestyle, habits, and beliefs often short circuit the self-healing mechanisms, and illness and dysfunction result.  Uncovering the underlying cause of health challenges, and integral part to the work that Dr. Loscalzo does, can be tricky.

Dr. Loscalzo incorporates a wide range of healing modalities into her practice, including lifestyle and nutrition counseling, stress management, manipulation, acupuncture and acupressure, craniosacral therapy, various forms of therapeutic massage, kinesiology, and supplementation of biocompatible nutrients, herbs, and homeopathic formulations.

The importance of diet in our overall health cannot be underrated

We have much more control over the way we feel than we are generally lead to believe. In general, disease does not just happen randomly. It results from disruption of the body’s self-regulating mechanisms and a loss of ability of the cells to repair and rebuild healthy tissue.

Our state of health is generally a result of a combination of genetic and environmental factors. We can not change our genetics, but many environmental factors are within our control.  And that is very good news.
